Relays and throws

Trailer

The trailer is the second infielder who sets up 25 to 30 feet behind the relay man, on the same line. He is the insurance: he catches an overthrow and long-hops an underthrow so the ball doesn't get away.

On a double, one middle infielder goes out as the relay man and the other trails him. If the throw sails over the relay man, the trailer catches it at chest level. If it bounces short, he plays the long hop.

The trailer also has the best view of the batter-runner. If the runner rounds second too far, the trailer yells "Cut 2!" so the relay man can throw behind him. That's the backdoor on a double.
