Relays and throws

Cut calls

Cut calls tell the cutoff or relay man what to do with a throw. "Cut hold" means catch it and hold it. "Cut" plus a base, like Cut 2, Cut 3 or Cut 4, means catch it and throw it to that base, with Cut 4 being home plate.

  • Through: let it go to the base. See Through.
  • Cut hold: catch it, look in, decide. Throw only to make an out.
  • Cut 1, Cut 2, Cut 3, Cut 4: catch it and throw to that base. Cut 2 is usually the backdoor behind a runner who rounded second; Cut 4 is the plate.

Who makes the call

The player at the base the throw is headed to owns the call, because he can see the runner and the ball at the same time. On a throw home that's the catcher. Everyone else at a base repeats his call, so the cutoff man hears it over the crowd. On a double with the throw going home, the third baseman repeats the catcher's call out to the relay man.
