Relays and throws

Relay man

The relay man is the infielder who goes out toward a deep hit, catches the outfielder's throw and throws it on to the base. On a double the ball is too far to throw all the way in, so the relay man catches every throw.

The outfielder throws to the relay man's chest, not a short hop. The relay man stands on the straight line between the outfielder and the base the ball is going to, already turning toward the infield as he catches it.

How far out he goes depends on arms. A strong-armed outfielder and relay man can be farther apart; with a weaker arm, the relay man comes out further and the throws stay short.

Who the relay man is

The middle infielder on the ball's side: the shortstop on balls to left and left-center, the second baseman on balls to right and right-center, including balls down the lines. The other middle infielder becomes the trailer. The first baseman never relays; he trails the batter-runner to second.
