Relays and throws

Lead runner

The lead runner is the runner farthest along the bases. When there's a choice, the defense tries to get him out first, because he's the one closest to scoring.

On a hit with runners on, the throw goes toward the lead runner, and the player at that base decides whether there's really a play. With two runners, if the lead runner is going to score anyway, the catcher calls "Cut 3" to get the trail runner instead.

On a bunt, the force on the lead runner is the first look: second base with a runner on first, third base with runners on first and second. First base is the fallback when the bunt is soft or the fielder has to come a long way.
