Calling for the ball

Calling for the ball means the fielder who will catch it says so loudly and more than once, so everyone else knows to stop. Infielders call early; outfielders and infielders use different words so an infielder instantly knows when an outfielder has it.

  • Call early. The moment an infielder thinks he can get there, he calls, knowing an outfielder may still call him off. Two late calls are how collisions happen.
  • Use different words. When outfielders and infielders use different calls, an infielder who hears the outfielders' word peels off at once, without having to work out who said it.
  • Nobody slows down on his own. An infielder under a ball in the shallow outfield keeps going until he's called off. Only a call changes a path.
  • The yield is spoken too. The player giving way says so out loud.
