The job, step by step
The same on all 3 plays below.
- FieldContact until the ball is caught
Stay at home plate. The third baseman owns the call on the throw to third; repeat it loud so the shortstop hears it.
- RelayThe ball on its way in
Hold the plate. Watch the lead runner in case the play changes direction.
- AssessThe ball back in the infield
Remain at home until the ball is dead. Call for the ball back to the pitcher.
Who you work with
- Third baseman owns the call on the throw to third
- Shortstop is the cutoff man
- Pitcher backs up third
Common mistakes
- Making his own call.
The man at the base the throw is headed to owns the call. Two different calls from two people is worse than none.
- Leaving the plate to back something up.
If the runner rounds third and the ball gets away, the next play is at home. The plate has to have someone on it.
